2020 TSORNA Board Report
We have organized a series of scientific activities with colleagues working at hospitals and universities.
We have started the year with a Symposium on Current Approaches in Neurosurgical Nursing on 17th January in İzmir.
In February, we came together to celebrate the European Perioperative nursing day with an important theme “We make the difference” Then we have continued with “Infection Hunters Scientific Meetings” held in İstanbul on March 2nd and in Konya on April 3rd.
At the beginning of May, 40 participants with more than 100 studies from Turkey attended the EORNA Congress held in The Hague, Netherlands. One of the studies was presented in the poster session titled “Is WHO Surgical Safety Checklist always applied as intended?” as one of the distinguished among the 20 best posters.
With participation of students and nurses, the international nurses’ day was celebrated between May 13th and 17th, 2019. In Turkey, we celebrate nurses’ day with a collaborative weeklong program, starting on May 12th includes conferences, competitions, and joyful student activities and meetings. It is a good opportunity to raise awareness on the importance of nursing professional.
As the President of TSORNA, I attended International Federation of Perioperative Nurses (IFPN) meeting held at the University of York -UK on September 9th, 2019.
Our biannual national congress was the highlight of perioperative nurses issues. 3rd International & 11th National Congress of Turkish Surgical and Operating Room Nurses was held in Çeşme-İzmir. We presented the latest developments in the field of surgical care with the information update sessions, conferences, satellite meetings, panels (national and international). 470 Perioperative Nurses from all around the country have participated in the scientific program and were accredited with 10 educational points from EORNA ACE. The theme of this congress was “Let’s increase the Quality of Health Care through the cooperation of the surgical team”. During the three-day national part of the congress, 206 papers were presented in oral sessions and 141 papers were presented in poster sessions. In the two-day international part of the congress, 69 studies were presented in English.
Recently a unique problem arised in Turkey, which is operating room technicians taking over the work of operating room nurses. This creates a problem in the position of operating room nurses. TSORNA has sent a report to Ministry of Health to prevent the operating room technicians to replace operating room nurses.
Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19, TSORNA had to postponed many educational activities, which were planned all year round.
Since pandemic has spread in Turkey in March, all hospitals were turned into pandemic hospitals. Therefore, intensive care units and operating rooms became one of the riskiest areas of the hospitals. In connection to this problem, TSORNA has prepared COVID-19 Perioperative Guidelines and its algorithms to be posted in the rooms.
As TSORNA we planned weekly webinar series in July and August to discuss the legal issues, psychological issues and new surgical issues
One good news in Turkey was that 14.000 new nurses were urgently recruited by the Ministry of Health during COVID pandemic.
