IFPN President’s Message May 2025
Happy Nurses Week 2025
A Message from the President of the International Federation of Perioperative Nurses (IFPN)
I extend my warmest congratulations and deepest thanks on behalf of the International Federation of Perioperative Nurses (IFPN) to global operating room (OR) nurses, celebrating Nurses Week 2025. Expertise, resilience, and unshakeable dedication serve as the cornerstone of secure and efficient surgical treatment across all healthcare settings, in every global area. Behind every successful procedure, operating room nurses frequently go unnoticed as the driving force – putting in extended hours, making urgent decisions, and occupying a pivotal position where technology, teamwork, and empathetic care converge. Your role necessitates exceptional precision, robust emotional resilience, and profound emotional understanding. Your contributions are consistently acknowledged, highly regarded, and joyfully commended.
This year’s theme for International Nurses Day (IND) 2025 “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies.” highlights the essential link between the well-being of nurses and the sustainability of global healthcare systems. With the rising complexity of surgical care and escalating global health issues, it is now more crucial than at any time to make the requirements of perioperative nurses a central priority in healthcare planning and policy-making. The IND 2025 report provides essential, research-backed methods to safeguard and assist nurses globally by focusing on their mental wellbeing, physical security and effective workplace settings. These comprise structured fatigue management, ergonomic support, safe staffing levels, robust infection control, and confidential mental health resources, which all assist in preventing burnout and enable nurses to excel in their positions.
According to ICN President Dr Pamela Cipriano, prioritizing the well-being of nurses is a necessity rather than a choice. This investment should be both wide-ranging and focused, particularly for nurses working in the perioperative setting. It is essential that OR nurses have a say in clinical decision-making, opportunities for leadership and quality improvement, and ongoing professional growth through advanced training and simulation-based education. Maintaining a healthy equilibrium between work and personal life is equally crucial through the implementation of fair and adaptable scheduling, allowing nurses protected breaks during prolonged procedures, and cultivating an environment that honours both the professional and personal requirements of nurses. Your knowledge, expertise, and influence are essential to the well-being, respect, and rehabilitation of every surgical patient.
International cooperation is increasingly crucial as global health concerns escalate and the requirements of surgery continue to change over time. Collaborating through collective knowledge and a unified voice, we can create a more robust, secure, and environmentally friendly future for perioperative nursing. During Nurses Week, and every week, we express our gratitude for the outstanding work that you perform. The effect you have is deeply significant and worldwide in scope.
Warm regards,
Meryem Yavuz van Giersbergen
President, International Federation of Perioperative Nurses (IFPN)
